課程概述

As a sequel to the introductory course on the quest for meaning (and certain semiotic models associated with it), this course explores an even more intriguing field of semiotic inquiry – risk and meaning. It looks into aspects of the spatial principle and certain applications in the history of art, science and philosophy. This course serves not only to engage with critical notions defined by Saussure and Peirce, but also to substantiate their theories with actual creative outputs found in history.

課程目標
This course induces students to reflect on a couple of issues: (1) what communication will be like in the future; (2) how we can improve approaches to studying art, nature and culture; (3) how we can use semiotics to enhance our general wellbeing.

課程要求
Students are required to (1) preview contents for each week; (2) participate rigorously in discussions; (3) present briefings of their term papers; (4) submit midterm and final papers.
